Safety Features To Look Out For

First and foremost, it would be wise to have specific safety features in a heater. Since you are looking into something for your bedroom, then these are essential to have. These things include:

1. Certifications

First and foremost, always make sure your infrared heater is certified by three organizations. Each company serves a specific purpose to make the heaters last a reasonably long time. Let us go over them more in detail down below:

  • Underwriters Laboratory (UL): This company tests over 19000 different products per year, ranging from many items such as alarms, electronics, medical devices, lasers, robotics, and security equipment.

UL tests for the latest products and technologies and marks them safe for usage worldwide.
  • Intertek (ETL): This company confirms that your product meets both external and internal standards. Overall, it gives the product that is listed more credibility in whatever market they are portraying.

In the circumstance we are currently talking about, portable heaters.
  • Canadian Standards Association (CSA): This company is one of the top leaders in testing, inspection, and certification worldwide. CSA goes through social good, sustainability, and safety.

They do these things all sound the world, like in Canada, USA, Europe, and Asia.

2. Shut-off Features

When the heater gets to be too hot, modern-day radiators come with an automatic shut-off button. This is to ensure better safety of yourself, so the heater does not catch on fire.

Not only that, but some heaters may be hot to the touch, and an automatic shut-off feature will allow the heat to cool down.

Many new heaters also come with a thermostat, so you can set it in a setting that will never get too hot and run all night.

3. Protect The Cord

A vast majority of fires happen because the power cord was damaged and not protected. It is never safe to leave a cable out in the open so where someone can easily trip on it.

This reigns true for younger children and animals or in the middle of the night when you have to use the restroom and are half asleep.

You may not see the cord, which, in return, makes both you and the heater tip over, and it can be damaging on both accords.

4. Tip-over Protection

Lastly, you’ll want a radiator that enables tip-over protection whenever it will lose its balance by something or someone bumping into it.

If the heater does not come with tip-over protection, it may cause a fire due to how hot it will get. You can avoid a lot of these issues by getting a radiator that comes with this magnificent feature.

Do Space Heaters Catch Fire Easily?

Improper Usage

If misused, space heaters can cause fires very quickly. These may be due to numerous things, but one of the main ways a space heater catches on fire is because of something flammable being near or on it, like a blanket, curtains, couches, chairs, clothes, etc.

Some homeowners love to put their space heaters in between their couches, but realistically, it is very easy for something small to fall on the sides of sofas or chairs.

If you have younger children, they are constantly dropping stuffed animals on the floor left and right.

Another example would be that if you are done with your blanket for the evening, you may not think about a space heater right beside you and have it fall on the side of where you are sitting. All of these things are a hazard and would cause fires in just minutes.

This is why it is crucial to keep objects 3-feet away from anything.

Circuit Overload

A space heater can cause a fire because the plug’s circuit can be overloaded or cause it to overheat. Never plug anything else with your heater. Most lines can only do 1500 watts, which is the general amount of wattage a space heater will use anyways.

Are Space Heaters Safe To Leave On All Night?

A modern-day space heater should be perfectly safe to leave on overnight. Truthfully, the safest space heaters to leave on during the night, especially within your room, are oil-filled heaters and infrared heaters.

How To Safely Use A Space Heater

There are quite a few ways to use a space heater safely and effectively. We went over some do’s and don’ts already, but it is always essential to know everything.

Always check with the manual to see what the company has to say as well. There may be specifications that they have for that particular model, which we have not covered today.

Nevertheless, here are other suggestions:

  • Place the heater on a solid, non-flammable, and ground-level instead of a dresser or your bed.

Unless the space heater is relatively tiny with tip-over protection, this could be dangerous, as the heater may wind up getting damaged or something else.
  • Establish a 3-foot perimeter for children and pets and keep objects 3-feet away from the heater.
  • Turn the heater off when you leave the room or go to sleep. As we already established, some heaters are safe to leave on during the night time or when you leave, but this is a safety precaution to constantly practice.
  • Unplug the heater when it is not being used, and check the cord periodically to ensure it is not damaged or ruined in any way, shape, or form.

If you notice any damage to the cable, stop using it altogether and get a new one.
  • Do not use a heater in a workshop or garage near gas cans, matches, or paints.
  • Install smoke detectors on every level of your home and in every single bedroom. Make sure to test them every month and switch out their batteries every six months.

Types Of Heaters

1. Convection

Convection is the process of heated atoms rising as high as they can go as they cool off and start to fall back down, where it will begin to get heated back up again, thus repeating the process.

Due to this, rooms warmed up by convection heaters tend to stay warm longer because of the convection process. The different types of convection heaters are as follows.

Oil-filled Radiators

Oil radiators are an excellent choice when it comes to being in your bedroom. They look very similar to old-fashioned radiators that used to keep the home warm back in the day.

They can be moved from each room and have oil inside an enclosed case where it boils and heats the coils the radiator provides. After it is initially heated and turned off, an oil-filled heater remains warm for quite some time.

Panel Space Heaters

These space heaters are relatively new and are growing in popularity. These radiators work similarly to oil heaters by allowing hot air to radiate off the device itself.

Panel heaters may be wall-mounted or set on the concrete, and the main distinction between the two is that these space heaters heat the air with electrical currents instead of oil.

Infrared Or Radiant Heaters

This radiator is unique because instead of heating the generalized area, infrared heaters will heat objects and people instead of the room, such as our clothes and skin.

They act very similar to what the sun will do but do not contain UV rays. Overall, it provides you with the same comfort that you will get from going outside as well.

If an infrared heater is a choice you wish to seek within your home, make sure to place the heater across the room from where you will be sleeping instead of the right above your head.

Fan Assisted

A fan-assisted heater is one of the most popular and frequent purchases in the market today. This is mainly due to how inexpensive they are.

Fan-assisted heaters are fast and convenient, as they will use air circulation to retain heat in the generalized area. Most space heaters will include a fan, but you can still purchase one without if it is best for you.

Ceramic Space Heaters

This space heater has ceramic plates that are then attached to metal coils. It is run by electricity, which flows through the coils and, in return, makes the ceramic plates heat up.

The ceramic plates absorb the electrical heat, which is then expelled into the air because it has to go somewhere. These heaters have a cool-touch exterior, making them perfect for children who like to touch anything and everything.

One of the many pros of ceramic heaters is that they will heat the area efficiently and quickly, which allows you to enjoy the healing benefits in a short amount of time. They are also the most energy-efficient electric heaters available.

Ceramic heaters come in both with and without a fan. If it has a fan, the fan will blow air over the ceramic places, which causes the heater to flow better in the room.

The heating will take relatively longer for those without a fan because the air is continuously released through the ceramic surfaces.

2. Metal Coil Space Heaters

Instead of having a ceramic plate that will help retain heat, metal coil space heaters have exactly what the description says: metal coils, which go around the heating elements and then transfer into the air.

They are the most basic in construction and function almost as ceramic heaters. These heaters will usually come with a fan, but if it does not, then metal coil heaters will take an extremely long time to heat the room it has been placed in.

3. Micathermic Space Heaters

Micathermic space heaters are relatively new in the heating world, but they have massive potential. These heaters run like all other space heaters combined.

They work mainly through convection and radiant heating. They use a fan to suck in the air, pass it over the heater’s elements, and release it back into the room. It uses convection to heat the air while also using radiant heating to warm other objects slightly. Overall, it will give you the best of both worlds!

Final Thoughts

Although it can be frustrating to know which heater would best suit you inside the bedroom, rest assured that we have researched for you. Now go out with confidence, knowing you have all the information you need to get your house warmed up in no time!
